Reflection & Overview
Engaging across these design modules has significantly deepened my awareness of key design concepts, bridging physical craftsmanship, empathetic research, and emerging technology. In the creating exercise, I gained a renewed appreciation for foundational visual skills and material constraints. Working across varied mediums from rigid graphite to unpredictable watercolors highlighted how physical tools dictate expression and require technical adaptation. This hands on practice reinforced that creativity is an active muscle requiring regular discipline, spatial awareness, and direct tactile engagement.
Similarly, the design thinking exercise broadened my understanding of contextual curiosity and user centred observation. Examining how footwear varies dynamically across daily routines revealed how objects embody functionality, hygiene, status, and emotional comfort. This emphasised that functional design is inherently relational, requiring deep observation of real world contexts to solve human needs.
Evaluating workplace environments through quantitative surveys and qualitative feedback expanded my knowledge of environmental psychology. I recognised how physical spatial layouts, acoustic friction, and lighting directly dictate productivity, focus, and baseline wellbeing.
Finally, testing generative AI tools deepened my critical awareness of automated design limits. Recognising that artificial intelligence merely predicts visual patterns without authentic intent reinforced that strategic brand identities require human judgment, taste, and emotional intelligence.
Completing these tasks provided transformative insights into material behaviours, research methodologies, and the essence of human centred design. A primary realisation from the daily drawing exercise was learning to embrace imperfection and release perfectionism. Mediums like ballpoint pen and watercolor forced me to work adaptively with resistance and unexpected bleeding, turning unpredictable properties into expressive assets rather than technical errors.
In the workplace survey, analysing employee data showed that physical environments act as silent facilitators of human energy. The conflict between open-plan collaboration and the cognitive demand for quiet focus proved that successful design must balance social connection with privacy. This revealed that effective spatial design is not merely aesthetic, but a crucial driver of psychological safety and sustained focus.
This understanding was further enriched by the documentary reflection on independent makers, which underscored the fundamental connection between physical labor, intrinsic motivation, and authentic design. Observing how artisans work with raw materials demonstrated that true craftsmanship arises from slow, intentional movements rather than rapid mass production. This directly paralleled my findings in the generative AI experiment. Attempting to generate brand assets with minimal prompting proved that automated systems lack genuine artistic instinct. While AI offers speed, it lacks human taste, contextual nuance, and artistic friction.
Ultimately, these exercises revealed that whether executing traditional drawing, spatial analysis, or AI iteration, meaningful design depends on human empathy, thoughtful intentionality, and intentional practice.
