Week 2

Undertake a detailed inquiry into one aspect of your interactions with the world for one day.

Design Thinking

Observing my footwear throughout one day revealed how each pair responds to a different activity, environment and need. Although all seven types cover and protect my feet, their designs vary according to comfort, safety, hygiene, performance and appearance. Fluffy socks and slippers prioritise warmth and comfort, while balcony slippers provide practicality and cleanliness. Work heels communicate professionalism, whereas commuting footwear prioritises comfort and mobility. Pilates socks improve grip and hygiene, while walking shoes provide support for movement. This comparison demonstrated that each item is necessary because footwear is highly context dependent. What works effectively in one environment may be uncomfortable, impractical or inappropriate in another.

Sleeping Socks

Fluffy socks are chosen instead of normal socks because they provide extra warmth and softness while sleeping. Their thick, comfortable design helps regulate body temperature and creates a sense of comfort and relaxation.

House Slippers

House slippers provide comfort and warmth, particularly during colder months. They also create a sanitary separation between indoor floors and bare feet, while providing support when moving around the house.

Balcony Shoes

Balcony slippers are kept separate from indoor footwear because they are exposed to dirt, water and outdoor surfaces. They are practical for everyday tasks such as hanging laundry, watering plants and maintaining the balcony.

Work Heels

Work heels contribute to a professional and polished appearance and complement a work uniform. Their design communicates formality and professionalism, while comfort remains important for wearing them throughout the workday.

Pilates Socks

Pilates socks are designed specifically for exercise, providing grip and stability during movements. They also offer hygiene by creating a barrier between the feet and shared studio equipment.

Sneakers

Walking shoes prioritise comfort, support and function. Their cushioning and secure design make them suitable for longer periods of walking and protect the feet from discomfort or injury.
