Week 5

Experiment with a Creative AI service(s) as part of a design activity and reflect on the outcomes and experience.

Automation and Artificial Intelligence

I have co-created a logo design for my website using Google Gemini-AI.

Prompt: Create a logo for my design portfolio website. My name is Mary S.

Prompt: Adapt this for the initials to merge into a shape

Prompt: Adapt this into a simplified version without a flat lay backdrop

Prompt: Adapt this into more movement and include simple shapes.

Prompt: Adapt more depth and textureinto the logo

Prompt: Adapt this into a simplified version with movement only flowing through to make initials, and make the palette green.

Prompt: Adapt this into using more colours, adding more interest and a focal point.

Prompt: Adapt this into a more organic exaggerated form

Prompt: Adapt this into a thicker, simple version with no flat lay elements

Prompt: Adapt this to have earthy tones and compress the shape

Prompt: Adapt this into a singular logo, with a singular exaggerated, fluid moving line

Prompt: Adapt the abstract lines into something symbolising a journey or road

Review

Testing generative AI through an iterative design exercise highlighted a core limitation in automated branding. AI fundamentally lacks distinct character, aesthetic judgment, and creative intent. To test its capabilities, I intentionally used minimal prompts, giving the system very little specific direction to see how long it would take to arrive at a refined, cohesive output independently.

Throughout the process, the AI repeatedly misidentified aesthetic direction, cycling through generic typographic layouts, awkward geometric shapes, and heavy handed physical textures before nearing an acceptable design. Because the system merely predicts visual patterns rather than understanding brand identity or nuance, each iteration required constant course correction to strip away unnecessary clutter and guide it toward a functional concept. Ultimately, this experiment proves that while generative tools can rapidly produce variations, they lack genuine artistic instinct reinforcing that thoughtful, meaningful design still requires human taste and intentionality.

Our journey continues

We invite you to explore the work from our previous weeks to see the full scope of our progress. Each week builds upon the last, contributing to the broader narrative of Marys-Design-Portfolio. We hope you enjoy seeing our journey unfold.
